Continuity Editing

Before starting our final film opening and the filming for it, we did continuity editing which required a small plot and had to include shots such as shot reverse shot, match on action and 180 degree rule within the few seconds of clip. We start off our continuity editing by making a storyboard for it, to help us decide what our plot was going to be and how we are going to add the certain shots into the short clip. Our clip initially was an argument between two people, who argued about something the audience watching didn't know about or of. This kept the audience in suspense of what those two people were arguing about and why they were arguing.
The continuity editing also helped us to know what was required when filming and how long the process of it can take. This also meant that we knew how to handle cameras and how to film different types of shots; with a specific amount of cameras that we were given to film with .

180 degree rule:
Definition: A basic guideline regarding the on-screen spatial relationship between a character and another character or object within a scene.

Match on action:
Definition: An editing technique for continuity editing in which one shot cuts to another shot portraying the action of the subject in the first shot.

Shot reverse shot:
Definition: A film technique where one character is shown looking at another character and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character.

Although we were able to film everything and start editing, we did not realize how long the whole process of filming, editing and putting final touches on was very time consuming as well as very hard for us as first timers with cameras and all the technology. We also were no able to put our whole film onto iMovie to edit because we were not able to get all the clips we filmed imported onto the Mac's as we did not have access of the camera we filmed the rest of the continuity task on. However we were able to learn a lot from doing the continuity task as it taught us to deal with our time better as well as know how to use the technology including the camera, the tripod and iMovie properly so we were able to do a better job when filming our main media product.
